OVC
Title Defense, Total Reset
Nolan Smith followed Tennessee State’s historic OVC double by importing Ty-Laur Johnson, Aaron Bradshaw and Arterio Morris. The names are enormous; repeating depends on rebuilding last season’s pressure, rebounding and trust around an almost-new rotation.

The cover line
UT Martin’s “freshmen” arrive with Georgian Superleague, Lithuanian NKL and Turkish pro-club experience, making last year’s 22-win newcomer formula a warning, not a surprise. Tennessee State still owns the ceiling; the Skyhawks may own the better-built March plan.

The opening tip
Run It Back With Almost Nobody Back
Nobody is really running it back, but the OVC’s winning formula survived the roster churn. Last season’s five best records all came from teams with either top-two shooting or a top-three opponent field-goal defense. Rebuild all you want; one bankable elite trait still separates a contender from a collection.
Tennessee State’s 2026 breakthrough looked like the start of a new standard. In Nolan Smith’s first season, the Tigers won 23 games, shared the regular-season title at 15-5 and ended a 32-year NCAA tournament drought by beating Morehead State 93-67. The 93 points and 26-point margin were OVC championship-game records. Then almost everyone left. The current returners accounted for just 123 of last season’s 2,651 points, 4.6 percent. Smith is not just defending a championship; he is testing whether its identity can survive a nearly complete cast change. Last season’s Tigers averaged 80.3 points, won the rebounding margin by 3.8 per game and generated 9.3 steals. Ty-Laur Johnson brings 14.6 points, 4.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game from San Diego. Arterio Morris adds another downhill creator, while 7-foot-1 Aaron Bradshaw shot 55.6 percent at Memphis and can punish the offensive glass. The tension is spacing: Johnson made 30.9 percent of his threes and Morris 25.0 percent. Tennessee State has the OVC’s highest ceiling, but its best five-man offense remains theoretical. UT Martin is not fooling us twice. Jeremy Shulman used almost the same disguise last season: 12 newcomers, nine labeled freshmen, then 22 wins while ranking third nationally in scoring defense, fourth in three-point defense and eighth in offensive rebounds. The labels are misleading again. Giorgi Sulaberidze was the MVP of Georgia’s Superleague, Gabrielius Bubnys played in Lithuania’s second-tier NKL and Kaan Onat came through Turkish professional clubs before starring in FIBA events. These are NCAA freshmen, not basketball freshmen. Filip Petkovski returns to organize it all. We’re onto Shulman’s scheme now: import skill and adult-basketball experience, teach the system, and let everybody else mistake unfamiliarity for inexperience. That makes the Skyhawks the clearest threat to Tennessee State and a roster capable of winning the tournament even if it finishes second in the regular season. SIUE is the continuity threat. Brian Barone returns seven players, including Tyler King and 45.3-percent three-point shooter Darrion Baker, then adds Gianni Cobb after he averaged 3.9 assists at Northern Illinois. The issue is replacing Defensive Player of the Year Arnas Sakenis and his 75 blocks. Southern Indiana takes the opposite route: after a 7-23 season, Stan Gouard added 12 newcomers but stocked the roster with upperclassmen. A healthy Kaden Brown, OVC-tested Afan Trnka and 6-foot-10 Yuto Yamanouchi-Williams give the Screaming Eagles more role definition than their newcomer count suggests. The projected middle owns real proof, too. Morehead State has won three regular-season titles in four years; even after losing its top three scorers, Jonathan Mattox can pair returning organizer Chase Dawson with NAIA All-American Kenyata Carbon and 16.3-point scorer Izaiah Day. SEMO lost four double-figure scorers, yet it may have imported the league’s most accomplished new backcourt. Fontaine Williams averaged 20.5 points and shot 41.5 percent from three at West Texas A&M, while Alonzo Clawson-Smith produced 18.8 points, 156 assists and 53 steals at IU Kokomo. The question is whether that production travels to Division I. Every contender is making a different bet: Tennessee State on star talent, UT Martin on system, SIUE on continuity, Southern Indiana on experience, Morehead State on institutional stability and SEMO on translation. The trophy belongs to Tennessee State. The race belongs to whichever team turns its bet into a dependable second answer first.
The defining storylineTennessee State owns the trophy but not last year's continuity: can Nolan Smith manufacture spacing and trust around three high-usage transfers before UT Martin, Southern Indiana and SIUE find more coherent identities?

Player of the Year
Why this pick leads
Ty-Laur Johnson has the strongest proven blend of scoring, playmaking and ball pressure, making him the favorite to drive Tennessee State’s reset. Marqueas Bell’s expanded role gives SEMO a two-way centerpiece, while 2025 Georgian Superleague MVP Giorgi Sulaberidze can crash the race if UT Martin runs offense through his scoring, rebounding and elbow playmaking.

A rivalry is born
Tennessee State Wins the League; UT Martin Wins the Bid
The OVC’s two most ambitious builds split the season series and meet again for the tournament title. Tennessee State’s star power claims the regular season; UT Martin’s internationally seasoned freshmen win the rubber match and go dancing. By March, this feels like the league’s next rivalry.

The OVC’s biggest rebound
Southern Indiana More Than Doubles Its Win Total
One year after finishing 7–23, Southern Indiana rides an older 12-player newcomer class to 18 wins and a top-three OVC finish. Kaden Brown and Afan Trnka keep two creators on the floor, while Yuto Yamanouchi-Williams gives the overhaul enough interior scoring and rebounding to hold.

A recent standard finally slips
Morehead State Misses the OVC Semifinals
Morehead State has reached four title games in six tournaments, so a sixth-place finish would feel worse than ordinary. With last season’s top three scorers, 47.9 percent of the team’s points, gone, Chase Dawson cannot stabilize every possession. The Eagles remain dangerous but exit before the semifinals.
